GSL is a containership lessor with a fleet of modern containerships leased out under long-term, fixed-rate time charters to container shipping liner companies.

Notwithstanding recent disruptions in trade flows caused by global economic upheaval, container shipping is a growth industry. As a key component of the intermodal transportation infrastructure supporting globalization, containerized trade exhibited a compound annual growth rate in volume terms (as measured in TEUs) of approximately 10% over the period from 1997 to 2007.

As a containership lessor, GSL's business is both pro-cyclical (with chartered tonnage used as a growth platform by liner shipping companies) and counter-cyclical (with sale and charter-back structures used by liner companies as a balance sheet management tool).
